1504 year.

The Betrothal of the Virgin Mary panel was specially ordered for the St. Joseph Chapel.

According to scientists, Raphael was inspired by two compositions created by his immediate teacher - Perugino.

Rafael indicated directly on the temple depicted in the picture his own name, as well as the date. The historical moment when Joseph puts a ring on Mary’s finger is captured. In his hands we see a staff, which is a symbol of chosenness. It is noteworthy that he blossomed with him, while others did not. We see two who are disappointed and break the staffs.

The composition structure is created by a polygonal temple. He dominates everything. It is the temple that determines how all the figures and the main group are located, in the foreground of this picture. The painter creates a special radial system with a center - a temple. If the viewer looks into the distance through numerous arcades and doorways, he has the impression that this system has a logical extension from the other side of this building filled with grandeur.

The composition has a circular structure. This rhythm is repeated by a group of guests of this wedding.

As for the color scheme, it is worth noting that mainly brownish and golden tones with some interspersed with other colors are used. The figures of all the characters in the picture are very bright. They seem to be in a very clean atmosphere. Its creation is largely helped by the light blue sky.

The structure of the work of Raphael is largely similar to the work of his teacher Perugino. Unlike horizontal composition, Raphael has a circular structure. It is this particular composition with a polygonal type building and a group of figures that completely distinguishes the work of Raphael from the creations of his teacher. The whole space in the artist’s painting is more open, and the perspective itself is depicted with the greatest skill.
